Malaysia is set to host next year, the largest engineering event of its kind to be held in the country.
The 46th ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress (WTC) 2020 was officially handed over to Malaysia at the recent WTC 2019 in Naples, Italy.
WTC, which is owned by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA), seeks to explore latest innovations, trends and advances in all areas of tunneling sustainably. The annual event brings together engineers, designers, construction professionals and best expertise in its field.
Locally organised by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), WTC 2020 will receive strong support from the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).
Datuk Zulkefli Hj. Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of MyCEB, speaking of the occasion when the local team clinched the bid in 2017, said: “The competition was stiff, but Team Malaysia was still able to convince ITA. This is attributed to the strong local organisation, IEM. The bid process called for very thorough proposals and mirroring the Malaysian hospitality, we included multi-lingual documents that instantly connected to both decision-makers and members.”
Datuk Zulkefli also announced that the seven-day event, slated to take place 15-21 May 2020, is expected to generate an economic impact close to RM21m (US$5m) from more than 1,500 delegates.
