Mash Media scoops double win at Business Travel Journalism Awards

Mash Media magazines Conference News and Conference & Meetings World each scooped a win at the Business Travel Journalism Awards on Thursday 5 October at the Natural History Museum, with Exhibition World being singled out for ‘High Commendation’. Journalists from national, consumer, broadcast, and trade media were recognised for their quality coverage on topics relating to business travel and meetings and events.

Cathy Newman, Channel 4 news journalist and broadcaster, hosted the night and was joined by the expert judging panel comprising of business travel and meetings managers, industry experts, and respected journalists.

Organised and promoted by leading travel management company, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, (CWT) the awards are a celebration of the achievements of individual journalists, designers and editorial teams.

CN and CMW editor Paul Colston was awarded Meetings & Events Editor of the Year for the second time, after winning it previously in 2012.

Meanwhile, CMW’s Oman supplement – Oman is waiting to meet you – picked up the Supplement of the Year for Meetings & Events award, which one judge describing it as the “best MICE destination supplement I have ever read, and one that I can take with me to Oman.” The award was collected by CMW deputy editor Martin Fullard and senior graphic designer Mana Assoudeh, who both put the supplement together.

Exhibition World editor Tom Hall, who was also nominated in the Meetings & Events Editor of Year catergory, was noted for high praise in the Features Writer of the Year – Destinations category, taking runners up position

After scooping his award, Colston said: “The award is great recognition to our Mash Media Conference Editorial team and our efforts, particularly over the past year to drive forward on all fronts, including print, online and introducing new products like our Association Event Manager publication.

“I think we have created the most talented, creative and hardworking team that I can remember here. It has been a privilege to continue to lead this development and seize new opportunities in a changing market that has seen many fall by the way.

“MICE and Mash is clearly a great recipe for success – as evidenced by our double success and also category nominations – and we look forward to more innovation and achievements to come.”

On winning Supplement of the Year for Meetings & Events, Assoudeh said: “With this supplement we wanted to try a different approach. Sometimes it is easy for such a magazine to be overloaded with information and end up text-heavy, which of course creates a challenge for the designer.

“Martin and I planned slightly less but more impactful and useful text which offered greater scope for original design. It is clean, clear, and concise.”
