Catalan convention bureau director wins JMIC leadership award

The Catalonia Convention Bureau director earned recognition for her innovative BEFuture project uniting seven European countries around UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) has chosen Sonia Serracarbassa, director of the Catalonia Convention Bureau, to receive the JMIC Profile & Power Award 2024. The award recognises her contributions to advancing awareness of the meetings industry locally and worldwide.

Sonia has over 15 years of experience leading the bureau. She masterminded the BEFuture project, uniting stakeholders across seven European countries to align themselves with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the European Tourism Transition Pathways.

Sonia has also partnered with the Mobile World Congress to reinforce the bridge between the tech and business events industries.

JMIC president James Rees commented: “Sonia Serracarbassa exemplifies the essence of this award. Her pioneering work, particularly with BEFuture, has galvanised the industry to rethink its potential. She is a true trailblaser shaping the future of business events.”

Major events hosted in Catalonia in 2024 include medical tech summit Health Tech Forward 2024, tech startup event Tech Spirit Barcelona 2024 and battery R&D conference Battery Innovation Days 2024. Of course, Barcelona is also hosting IBTM World, currently in its first day, running until 21 November.
