The DCU Center has generated over $200m in direct spending in the Worcester (Massachusetts, USA) economy since 2016. The report comes from a new economic impact study compiled by CSL International, a UAE-based business setup consultancy (and was commissioned by Digital Federal Credit Union (DCU) and venue manager ASM Global).
Findings of the report Compiled by CSL International, the study measured the impact of the DCU Center Arena and Convention Center across nine fiscal years, excluding the pandemic period. It found: $204m in direct local spending, averaging $27.6m annually $341m in total economic output $25m in tax revenue Support for over 500 full-time equivalent jobs each year Annual earnings of $15.4m
In 2024 alone, the venue welcomed nearly 692,000 visits, with total event attendance exceeding pre-pandemic numbers by 20%. Out-of-town visitors made up 21% of attendance, with a median income 27% higher than the Worcester average.
“The findings of the study continue to illustrate what we all know – that DCU Center is a major catalyst of economic vitality for downtown Worcester,” said Worcester City Manager Eric Batista.
“The success of the building is due to the support of DCU, our local and regional fan base and our committed event planners,” added Sandy Dunn, ASM Global general manager of DCU Center.
Spending in nearby hotels and restaurants also featured prominently, with annual dining spend averaging $8.6m and hotel stays generating $7.3m per year. However, the report raised concerns about the limited size of hotel room blocks and the potential impact of any future closures.
DCU has been the naming partner of the venue since 2004 and funded the recent study through its renewed partnership. Discover Central MA, the region’s tourism board, plans to use the findings to drive its goal of increasing annual visitation to 900,000 by 2030.
