FCM Meetings & Events Ideas Exchange (IDEX) thought-leadership event took place at the Porter House Hotel in Sydney, bringing together a group of industry professionals to discuss the ‘S’ in ESG – ‘Social’. The Social aspect of ESG is defined as the consideration of humans and our interdependencies. Thought leaders at the in-person event included Flight Centre Travel Group’s head of people and culture, Allisa O’Connell, and FCM Meetings & Events general manager, Simone Seiler. Seiler said: “The travel industry is moving into a new world where businesses are placing a greater emphasis on ESG when it comes to planning meetings, events, and conferences.” “The IDEX event focused specifically on knowing your supply chain and taking social responsibility at every level. ESG issues can carry significant reputational and operational risks in the complex procurement arena.” According to Seiler, discussions included what a ‘good’ supply chain looks like in events and travel, and what robust processes and controls should be embedded across an organisation to supply chain health and safety and human rights. Seiler explained that, for the in-person event itself, FCM wanted to challenge expectations and reimagine traditional meetings to “encourage immersion, participation, and collaboration.” The IDeX event was based on a salon concept which aimed to curate an environment for informal learning, discussion, and collaborative action. Overall, the event’s third year was considered as successful as the first two.
