The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) is calling on both political parties (Australian Labor Party and Liberal Party of Australia) to help with the recovery of the country’s inbound tourism. The new government will be decided at the federal election that will likely be held in May 2025.

ATEC has released its 2025 Policy Pillars, outlining its key priorities. The organisation is calling on the incoming government to commit to policies that: Strengthen air access Rebuild workforce capacity Enhance distribution networks Invest in destination marketing Drive digital transformation and reform visa processes

ATEC managing director Peter Shelley said industry feedback has shaped the 2025 policy platform: “Australia’s inbound tourism sector is still in recovery, facing ongoing challenges that limit its full potential,” Shelley said. “The next Federal Government must back tourism with targeted support”.

Inbound visitors generate more than $32bn in spending annually, supporting over 350,000 businesses, including 100,000 in regional Australia. ATEC warns that without targeted government support, Australia risks losing market share to international competitors, slowing recovery and limiting long-term growth.

ATEC’s Pillars and Key Initiatives 2025 document is available here.
