The Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference (one of the largest of its kind) has been cancelled for 2025. The change comes amid a new tide of legislation relating to trans issues in the US.
The University of Pennsylvania, for example, had $175m of funding frozen by the White House due to the school’s policies on transgender athletes. It is unclear if University of Pennsylvania directly funded Mazzoni Center (the organisers) or the conference directly.
Organisers at Mazzoni Center said the event will be replaced with year-round programming under a new name: the Charlene Arcila Trans Wellness Collective. Mazzoni’s leadership added that “finite resources” and staffing limitations were major reasons for cancelling the annual conference.
The Mazzoni Center is the largest trans health provider in Philadelphia. It offers gender-related care, HIV treatment, mental health support and legal aid. The centre serves 15,000+ clients annually.
“Recognising the challenging landscape that our trans community is facing today, we believe that the current environment calls for a necessary shift from a single, concentrated event to year-round programming,” organisers said in a statement.
Mazzoni has had its fair share of financial challenges in recent years. Two funding companies are now suing the centre for a combined $1.3m. The loans – known as “merchant cash advances” – offered quick access to cash in exchange for a cut of future revenue, but reportedly came with “alarming” interest rates.
Mazzoni says the deals were signed without proper authorisation and is fighting the claims in court. A trial is set for May 2026. Mazzoni has warned that repayment, including fees and legal costs, could trigger bankruptcy.
However, it has also received new backing, including a five-year $1.8m grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts and a $400,000 federal appropriation for infrastructure in 2024. Mazzoni Center is currently looking for a new CEO.
