Agent killed on Phuket FAM trip

ASIA – An Australian travel agent has reportedly been stabbed to death and her colleague hurt while on a FAM trip in Phuket, Thailand.
 
According to a report on Travel Mole Asia, the women were part of a group of 10 travel agents visiting the five-star Katathani Beach Resort on a trip organised by Asia Escape Holidays.
 
The pair were walking near their hotel complex on Phuket’s west coast at around 10.30pm on 19 June when they were reportedly attacked by two men who approached them on a motorbike.
 
A spokesman for Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs said Thai police had launched an investigation into the woman’s death.
 
CMW reported in February how the town was in a bid to clean up its image for the sake of its tourism future. It is thought the push is in part due to the construction of Phuket’s conference and exhibition centre, which is to proceed rapidly now that environmental objections have been overturned. 
 
The go-ahead for the 2.6 billion baht project, seen as essential for Phuket’s tourism future, was welcomed in November 2011.
