Aichi/Tokoname, the Crossroad between Modernity and Tradition
Aichi Sky Expo is located in the heart of Japan’s economy, Aichi where various industries thrive. Aichi is the hometown for 7.5m people and the area boasts a GDP of US$278bn. This dynamic GDP is supported by a world-class manufacturing industry. Aichi Prefecture is Japan’s No. 1 manufacturing Prefecture where various industries thrive, and has logged $314bn in manufactured product shipment value, which has been No. 1 in Japan for 44 consecutive years. Not only is Toyota’s worldwide head office located in Aichi Prefecture but also other leading manufacturing companies such as DENSO, DMG MORI and Mazak, are headquartered in Aichi. The automotive, aerospace and robotic industries are the three main industries in Aichi. Almost half of all automobile related parts in Japan are produced in Aichi, representing $170bn. The Chubu region where Aichi Prefecture is located has been designated as a Special Zone to Create Asia’s No.1 Aerospace Industrial Cluster by the Japanese government and 171 companies operate within the region. In Japan, Aeromart, a leading aerospace event is organised in Nagoya each year and Aichi Sky Expo successfully hosted the 2021 edition. Aichi is home to 77 companies, representing 16,1% of all robotic-related companies in Japan. 3,400 employees work in the robotics industry in Aichi. The government has especially spotlighted manufacturing robots, medical robots and unmanned flying robots. Aichi Prefecture actively hosts robotic events such as the Robocup Asia-Pacific 2021, worldwide robotics competition held at Aichi Sky Expo. Aichi Sky Expo recommends technical visits via the tourism agency to see up-close the latest product lines in Japan as a post-convention programme. The Chubu region including Aichi is also accelerating the realisation of a hydrogen society. The Chubu region founded the Hydrogen Utilisation council in 2020 with the aim of commercializing hydrogen energy by 2030. The council is composed of leading companies such as Mitsubishi, Kawasaki and Air Liquid. Since the Chubu region is an industry concentrated zone, there is a special focus on industrial use for refining petroleum, treating metals, generating electricity and logistics. Moreover, Aichi is a leader in fuel cell technology, especially fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), and Japanese leaders look to export this technology to the world. Today, the manufacturing industry such as the automotive, aerospace and robotic industries are well represented, but the history of manufacturing in Aichi Prefecture goes back more than 400 years. Traditional manufacturing industries such as pottery is also still very active, particularly in Tokoname city where Aichi Sky Expo is located. Tokoname city is famous for pottery and its Tokoname-yaki is recognised as one of six ancient Kilns in Japan, and is certified as official Japanese Heritage sites since spring 2017. In the old town of Tokoname you can not only find Tokoname Kiln products, but also Japanese traditional houses and their authentic atmospheres. The Aichi prefecture, meanwhile, continues to develop exciting projects from a tourism and business point of view. Tourism attractiveness has been reinforced with the opening of Ghibli Park in November 2022, which showcases the world of Studio Ghibli, the Japanese anime studio. Aichi Prefecture is also accelerating international economic co-operation made in Aichi, with the inauguration of Station Ai in October 2024, the largest start-up incubation facility in Japan.
Aichi Sky Expo, exhibition and convention centre with a sustainable design
Aichi Sky Expo is the first exhibition centre certified CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment Efficiency) S rank, S being the highest rating in the system. Aichi Sky Expo has also acquired ZEB (Net Zero Energy Building) Ready certification, which is given to buildings that reduce annual primary energy consumption by 50% or more. In addition, a tree-supporting wall greening system called ‘Vertical Forest®’ is installed at the entrance eaves to visualise the environmental design. Furthermore, as it is surrounded by the ocean, Aichi Sky Expo places particular emphasis on initiatives to counter marine pollution. When cleaning the facilities, we have reduced the use of surfactants, which do not easily decompose in rivers and oceans, and use instead mainly alkaline ionised electrolysed water, which contains no chemicals or environmental pollutants. In addition, as a countermeasure against the scattering of trash into the bay due to events held outdoors, we regularly conduct trash pick-up activities in the surrounding areas. As Aichi Prefecture makes many unique products, the entrance hall and mall of Aichi Sky Expo are decorated with local products, including Aichi Certified Wood, Obara Washi paper, bricks from Seto, and porcelain tiles made in Tokoname.
