AUSTRALASIA – Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) says it has experienced one of its busiest periods on record in the lead up to the G20 Leaders Summit.
August and September saw the centre welcome 223 events including 35 conventions delivering 15,000 delegates to Brisbane with an economic boost to the city of AUS$39m (US$34m) for the two-month period.
The centre has reported a 22 per cent increase in the number of conventions held compared to the same period last year, continuing the trend of the number of conventions doubling over the past five years.
Back-to-back international conferences, the 29th International Horticultural Congress and the 17th World Congress of the International Association of Applied Linguistics 2014, led a strong line-up of 115 conferences hosted by BCEC this calendar year.
“The G20 is a catalyst to build on our already strong track record of hosting international scientific, technology and business events and the heightened awareness of Brisbane and its scientific and research credentials will help attract these key sector conferences,” says BCEC General Manager Bob O’Keeffe.
The centre hosted 171 advance visits relating to G20 and this week welcomed the G20 Task Force to commence operational preparations for what will be the largest event hosted by the centre.
