Amsterdam Conference Centre Beurs van Berlage, which sit in the magnificent old stock exchange building, is now officially a Certified B Corporation and has also achieved Green Globe Gold status.
While Green Globe focuses primarily on sustainable operations and hospitality, B Corp takes a broader view of the impact of the organisation as a whole. Together, the certifications reflect the venue’s ambition to take responsibility for its historic building, its people, its partners, society and the environment.
Willemijn de Vet, marketing director at the Beurs van Berlage, said: “We naturally want to treat our listed building with care and organise increasingly sustainable events. But we consider it just as important how we treat people, which organisations we collaborate with, and what role we play as an organisation within the city and society. The two certifications therefore complement each other incredibly well.”
The Beurs van Berlage continues to work towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and has set specific targets for gas, water, food waste and general waste.
Marieke Dijkman was appointed sustainability manager at the venue this year and has has overseen the Green Globe certification process while launching a raft of initiatives, such as the partnership with Orbisk, whose AI-driven technology provides insight into food waste. This enables the Beurs van Berlage to make more targeted decisions on procurement, planning and food preparation.
Beurs van Berlage also offers employment opportunities to people who face barriers to the labour market and supports various charities and social initiatives.
Designed by architect H.P. Berlage and opened in 1903, the iconic national monument, Beurs van Berlage has been bringing people together to exchange knowledge, ideas and inspiration for more than 120 years.
