The Cairns Convention Centre is set to host over 21,000 medical and scientific delegates from Australia and abroad between July 2024 and June 2025. This follows a successful first half of 2024, where the venue welcomed leading scientific minds for international conferences.
In July 2024, the centre hosted the Viruses of Microbes (VoM) conference – the first time this event was held outside Europe. The five-day conference drew over 500 experts in microbial virology, showcasing advancements in the field.
Upcoming notable events include: Australasian Genomic Technologies Association Annual Conference (October 2024) Australian Archaeological Association Annual Conference (December 2024) Congress of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (April 2025) Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Annual Scientific Meeting (May 2025) Travel Managers Australia Conference, featuring Olympic champion Cathy Freeman (September 2024)
In August, the Quark Confinement and the Hadron Spectrum conference attracted over 500 delegates to Cairns. The main reasons for hosting the event at the Cairns Convention Centre included the venue’s tiered auditorium, flexible event spaces and strong ties to the scientific community.
Dr. Ayse Kizilersu from the University of Adelaide, School of Physical Sciences, who led the organisation of the event, said: “We were delighted to head to Cairns for the conference. Both the venue and destination offered incredible appeal to our delegates and it meant we had a high level of attendance from around the world.”
Janet Hamilton, general manager of the Cairns Convention Centre, noted the economic and collaborative benefits these conferences bring to Cairns: “We’re thrilled to welcome delegates from all corners of the globe. The Centre serves as an ecosystem for knowledge sharing, education, and community engagement.”
