ChristchurchNZ research: 20% of delegates consider relocating after attending conferences

ChristchurchNZ has released the first results of its three-year Conference Legacy Project, showing that one in five international delegates at four 2024 Christchurch conferences are now considering relocating to the city. The research, presented at AIME 2025 in Melbourne on 11 February, highlights how conferences aren’t just about short-term economic impact – they’re shaping workforce migration and industry development.

High-value connections and scientific advancement

According to the interim report, compiled by Carmel Foley and Dr Anja Hergesell from the University of Technology Sydney, 89% of delegates said their conference created new knowledge-sharing and collaboration opportunities, while 85% said it helped advance their field.

Early-career professionals reported gaining significant benefits – they said that the event helped them build networks and capabilities that will influence their sectors long-term. “This data reinforces what organisers already know: the right conferences create platforms for real knowledge exchange and long-term sector growth,” said Kath Low, head of visitor economy at ChristchurchNZ.

Sustainability and inclusivity matter to attendees

The findings also underline shifting expectations among attendees. 64% agreed their conference was designed to minimise environmental impact, and 62% felt the venue choice reflected sustainability values.

Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, where all four conferences were held, is net carbon zero certified and has built a reputation for its waste minimisation and sustainability practices – something 68% of delegates noticed.

What this means for conference organisers

For organisers, the results highlight key trends: Conferences drive career movement: 20% of delegates are exploring relocation opportunities because of the event. Knowledge-sharing is a priority: Nearly 90% of delegates said their conference provided new learning and collaboration opportunities. Sustainability is now a decision-maker: Attendees are paying significant attention to venue choices and environmental commitments.

“This study is just the start,” said Foley. “As we expand our dataset across Wellington and Auckland, we’ll gain a national perspective on how conferences contribute beyond immediate economic returns.”

For organisers looking to maximise the legacy impact of their events, ChristchurchNZ’s findings suggest that talent attraction, industry growth, and sustainability strategies need to be part of the planning process—no
