EUROPE – Copenhagen has been named as the number one green city in the latest edition of the Global Green Economy Index.
The 2012 Global Green Economy Index (GGEI), which measures green city reputations, was conducted by international consultants, Dual Citizen Inc. The survey ranks perceptions of green performance in the main cities of 27 nations.
The survey underlined Copenhagen’s ongoing efforts towards improving its environmental sustainability. Despite increased and stringent requirements for achieving a Danish Green Key certification, 64 per cent of hotel rooms in the city now hold official eco-certificates according to the survey.
Copenhagen was also named European Green Capital 2014, a title placed upon a city which has a well-established record of achieving high environmental standards, is committed to meeting goals, and acts as a role model to other cities.
The GGEI survey also ranked Denmark as the number one country, placing it first in terms of national green economic performance and second in terns of perception.
