The first ever Destination Professionals Day is taking place on 19 February. The event, organised by Destinations International (the association for destination companies), is recognising the role of destination organisations in attracting events and driving local economies.
Destination organisations market and manage host cities, support event organisers, and help attract conferences and exhibitions. However, industry figures often complain that a lack of industry recognition means fewer resources, weaker advocacy and missed opportunities for event growth.
Chief advocacy officer Jack Johnson raises eight key problems caused by this lack of awareness: Limited public and political support, making budget cuts more likely. Difficulty recruiting and retaining talent. Missed collaboration opportunities with businesses and event organisers. Perception that destination professionals only focus on tourism, rather than economic and community development. Industry vulnerability during economic downturns and crises. Lack of clear success metrics, making advocacy harder.
Destination Professionals Day aims to raise awareness of their contributions to economies and communities around the world. For more information, visit destinationprofessionalsday.com.
