SWITZERLAND – The developers of the Andermatt Swiss Alps, Kuala Lumpur-based Denniston International Architects and Planners, claims the resort will be the first carbon neutral destination in the country.
The resort, at the foot of the Gotthard Massif in Switzerland, broke ground in September 2009 on a complete revamp of its offering to allow it to be an all-year-round destination and will start to be completed by 2013. It will be comprised of six four and five star hotels with a total of 844 hotel rooms; 490 apartments; an 18-hole golf course; 35,000sqm of commercial space; and congress facilities for up to 600 delegates.
The Andermatt Swiss Alps’ building materials will be locally sourced with eco-friendly restrictions and its electricity and heat will be sourced from renewable resources.
In related news, Switzerland has recently assumed the presidency of the Alpine Convention from Slovenia. The convention is an international treaty on sustainable development signed by eight alpine countries and the European Union. It covers 190,000 square kilometres of alpine territory and aims for international cooperation on spatial planning, soil conservation, farming, forestry, tourism, transport and energy.
