SINGAPORE – The Marina Bay Sands Resort and Expo has been awarded the licence to operate a casino, just one day before it opens its doors to the public.
There had been speculation that the licence would not be issued in time for the opening. It is the second licence issued by the Casino Regulatory Authority of Singapore this year. The first licence was awarded to the Malaysian Genting’s Resort World on Sentosa island last month.
The first conference to take place at the Marina Bay Sands Resort and Expo will be The Pacific Bar Association conference, which will take place from 2 to 5 May in the first completed phase of the new venue, due to open on 27 April.
Other events scheduled to take place at the US$5.5bn venue include the Sound and Light Visual conference and tradeshow from 16 to 18 June, and the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) annual Congress, which returns to Singapore after a 15-year absence.
