The Global Hepatitis Summit 2027 will be held in Melbourne, following a successful bid by the Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) in partnership with the Burnet Institute and the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity. The biennial international conference will take place in the first half of 2027 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, drawing hundreds of medical professionals, researchers, and trainees from across the world. It marks the latest addition to Melbourne’s growing portfolio of global medical events.

Demonstrating Australian expertise in liver disease research

The four-day programme will include keynote addresses, scientific plenaries, clinical workshops, networking opportunities and an exhibition, and is expected to provide a platform for showcasing Australia’s expertise in liver disease research, including viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

“Our strong community of academics and researchers, as well as our two world-class institutes in the Burnet and Doherty, showcase Melbourne’s unparalleled ability to … transformational legacies,” said Julia Swanson, chief executive of the Melbourne Convention Bureau.

Professor Brendan Crabb AC of the Burnet Institute added: “The Summit is an opportunity … for the Victorian and Australian research community to showcase our capabilities and collaborate to address this global health issue.”

Melbourne’s bid was supported by Tourism Australia’s Bid Fund Program. The Summit joins other major medical events on Melbourne’s calendar, including the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025 and the World Congress of Gastroenterology 2025.
