PCO ICMS Australasia has seen off its third international meeting in Sydney for 2022 which, when combined, have provided the local economy and suppliers with an injection of more than AUD$7m (US$4.4m). The XXXIV International Congress of the International Academy of Pathology was held at the ICC Sydney, Australia, between 13-15 October with more than 1,300 delegates attending in-person and virtually. This event follows the 20th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in May (1,338 delegates) and the International Meeting on Lithium Batteries in late June (1,203 delegates). As well as significant expenditure at the ICC Sydney and other venues of more than $3.m, the three conferences provided delegate accommodation at Sydney hotels exceeding 8,000 room nights. ICMS Australasia owner and managing director, Emma Bowyer, said the strong financial outcomes of hosting international meetings was just one positive benefit to the city of many. “Each of these conferences provided significant opportunities for the local hosts to share knowledge with their international counterparts, highlight their important research, and potentially increase local investment and forge new business relationships,” she said. “International meetings contribute both immediate and long-term benefits and it’s clear that these events have done that.” Bowyer thanked BE Sydney which assisted in securing ICSMGE 2022, IMLB 2022 and IAP 2022 for Sydney, and in its ongoing support, assisting ICMSA with increasing international attendance. ICMSA says it is now looking ahead to a strong forward calendar of international meetings in 2023 and beyond, with a number in Sydney and many more being hosted in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and the Gold Coast. The largest of these is the World Mining Congress in Brisbane (June 2023) with an anticipated 3,000 delegates. Combined, ICMS Australasia’s pipeline of meetings will attract over 20,000 participants.
