IHG opens new intercontinental hotel in Melbourne

IHG Hotels and Resorts has opened the Intercontinental Sorrento Mornington Peninsula, its second Intercontinental property in Melbourne. The heritage-listed hotel is located on the Mornington Peninsula, about 100km south of Melbourne city centre, was opened in 1875 and was formerly known as the Hotel Continental. Alongside announcing the hotel’s opening, IHG has also revealed the hotel’s newly-built wing and private outdoor terraces. Additional new facilities include a pool deck and several restaurants The hotel has stated that it is looking to attract MICE guests, as its meeting and events options include the Grand Ballroom which accommodates up to 150 guests. Intercontinental Sorrento Mornington Peninsula joins the existing Intercontinental Melbourne in the city’s central business district, as well as IHG’s other Australian properties in Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, the Gold Coast and the Whitsundays. Sydney will be the next area to gain an IHG hotel, as the new-build Intercontinental Parramatta is scheduled to open in 2025. Matthew Tripolone, managing director of Australasia and Pacific at IHG Hotels and Resorts, commented: “The opening of Intercontinental Sorrento Mornington Peninsula [will offer] brand new experiences for both locals and international visitors alike.’”
