MALAYSIA – The Malaysian Government has given the green light for the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s (KLCC) expansion plans.
The development, which is due to be completed by the end of 2013, would give the KLCC an extra 10,000sqm of meetings and exhibition space. The centre estimates this expansion would generate a 40 per cent increase in events revenue.
The construction plans are due to be finalised in April, with work to begin in the last quarter of 2011. The development is part of the Malaysian Government’s Greater Kuala Lumpur Development Plan, which includes additional hotel rooms and a 2km pedestrian walkway linking places of interest, hotels and KLCC.
The GM of KLCC, Datuk Peter Brokenshire, said the centre would grow its conference business from a 25 per cent share of all events to 30 to 40 per cent.
Since its 2005 opening, KLCC has hosted 3,377 events including over nine million delegates and visitors, contributing around US$840m to the economy.
