Monaco is renowned as an event destination Like Nowhere Else. It offers unique venues, exceptional services, and a breathtaking setting that makes every event truly memorable. The Principality also stands out for its strong commitment to sustainability which has intensified since the accession of HSH Prince Albert II in 2005. In line with the Sovereign’s environmental policy, the Monaco Government Tourist and Convention Authority has been working closely with its stakeholders to develop more sustainable tourism and event offerings.
A committed Hotel industry
With its 2500 bedrooms, the Principality offers a different atmosphere in every hotel to allow attendees to live a unique experience each time they come to Monaco. Over 80% of the bedrooms are certified (Green Globe, Green Key, Planet 21), and in addition, 97% of hotels have signed the National Pact for Energy Transition. Some major actions include the ban on single-use plastic, the optimisation of energy consumption and waste reduction and the creation of vegetable gardens to provide customers with locally fresh products.

Venues that lead by example
Over 5000sqm of solar panels have been installed on rooftops in the Principality. The Congress and Culture Centre, the Grimaldi Forum Monaco, became the first solar power station in the destination with its 2,500sqm of photovoltaic panels. Other venues including the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort followed the initiative. Monaco is a pioneer in the use of Heat Pumps. Fairmont Monte Carlo has boasted a sophisticated heating and air-conditioning system that draws water from the Mediterranean at a depth of 40m. Other venues that are heated or cooled using heat pumps with sea water include the Oceanographic Museum, the Rainier III Auditorium, and the Grimaldi Forum Monaco.

A true host destination for responsible events
Thanks to its walkability with the close proximity to major venues and hotels and its solid environmental policy, Monaco welcomes key events in connection with biodiversity such as the Monaco Electric Boat Challenge or The Monaco Ocean week and The Monaco Blue Initiative who gather every year a global community of ocean leaders who debate the future of our oceans and seas, while events like EVERshowcases the latest renewable energy technology with a focus on vehicle design. And it is no surprise that the first-ever Sustainable Gastronomy Summit was inaugurated in Monaco in September 2023.

Monaco’s online carbon calculator
The Monaco Convention Bureau is here to help you organise your event sustainably, with a new online carbon calculator* that has been created with the support of its dedicated CSR team and the Government’s Energy transition department. It is an educational tool used to provide a general estimate of your event’s carbon footprint along with personalised recommendations on how to reduce it. Before the end of 2023, the Bureau will additionally provide a sustainable destination guide for organisers looking for solutions for ever more responsible events. * It is not intended to replace a complete carbon footprint report produced by a professional.

Monaco, signatory of the Glasgow declaration
A crucial response to the need for urgent climate action in the tourism industry, the Glasgow Declaration aims to reduce emissions by half over the decade, and to achieve net zero as soon as possible before 2050. Following the publication of its Responsible Tourism White Paper, the Monaco Government Tourist and Convention Authority has signed the Glasgow Declaration on climate action in Tourism in October 2022. It will submit its action plan to the UNWTO before end of 2023, built around the five pathways identified by the Glasgow Declaration: Measure, Decarbonise, Regenerate, Collaborate, and Finance. Through long-term, everyday efforts, we can take the measures needed to help the climate and achieve our goals.
