The outgoing year, 2022, saw Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), together with the industry partners, stage 152 business and international sporting events for Malaysia despite the ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic. Over the year, MyCEB managed to bring in 402,320 delegates to the country out of which, 92,000 were international. The estimated economic impact generated from the year is around RM1.23bn (US$280m), an upturn indicating that the business events industry is picking up pace for recovery. MyCEB says it and its industry stakeholders are already preparing to stage 35 business events activities in 2023, anticipating to welcome at this stage 40,000 local and international delegates. MyCEB says it has secured a pipeline of 88 events for 2023–2030 and only expects the numbers to increase. MyCEB and local MICE industry professionals remain cautiously optimistic over the planning of events and are adapting to lingering uncertainties, according to Dato’ Sri Dr Abdul Khani Daud, CEO of MyCEB. “The solid pipeline of events that Malaysia has managed to anchor in 2022 and beyond reflects event organisers’ unwavering confidence in the country’s fundamentals, highlighted by its vibrant business culture, excellent infrastructure, stable government, and stellar track record in hosting high-quality events,” the CEO said. MyCEB says it has also witnessed a major boost for its enhanced incentive programme for international business events groups. Riding on that momentum, MyCEB will continue to emphasise on five main segments in the business events industry: Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions and International Sporting Events. To strengthen the five segments of core focus, the national bureau said it intended to re-appoint MyCEB representatives for the China, India, Republic of Korea and ASEAN market to explore global opportunities in business events and add value to business interactions that better understand competitive advantages and the value chain. “Malaysia is gunning for prominent international shows for it is our aim to bring home the next World Expo and business events equivalent as such,” Dato’ Sri Dr. Abdul Khani Daud added. MyCEB also confirmed it would be participating in international meetings and tradeshows, and this year, including AIME in Australia, IMEX Frankfurt and America and IBTM World Barcelona. Package offerings such as the Meet in Malaysia Campaign will be bolstered, the CVB added.
