Adaptation Futures 2025 (AF2025), the world’s largest climate adaptation conference, will come to Ōtautahi Christchurch, New Zealand on 13-16 October. The event, held under the United Nations’ World Adaptation Science Programme (WASP), will focus on Pacific and indigenous climate adaptation challenges. It will be hosted by Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha/University of Canterbury, with support from New Zealand and international WASP sponsor institutions.

Climate adaptation and Indigenous leadership in focus

The conference will bring together scientists, policymakers, industry leaders and investors to explore climate-resilient development, food security, water infrastructure and ocean protection. A hybrid format will allow both in-person and online participation at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre.

Alongside academic sessions, arts events, living labs and field days will take place throughout Christchurch. These will offer opportunities for collaboration and skill-sharing.

Ngāi Tahu leader and event co-patron Lisa Tumahai highlighted the importance of Indigenous leadership in climate adaptation: “Our people have been adapting for generations. It is essential that indigenous voices influence adaptation policy now and in the future.”

Christchurch’s resilience and expertise

Ōtautahi Christchurch, New Zealand’s second-largest city, has undergone a 14-year transformation following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Mayor Phil Mauger noted that Christchurch’s experience with adaptation makes it a fitting host: “We understand adaptation like no other city in New Zealand. The lessons from our earthquake recovery can inform climate adaptation globally.”

Call for submissions

The conference is expected to attract over 1,200 delegates, with registration now open. The deadline for session proposals and abstracts is 1 March 2025. For more details, visit the AF2025 website.
