Nobel Laureate and 2,000 scientists to descend on Innsbruck

The Austrian city of Innsbruck is gearing up to host the annual congress of the European Atherosclerosis Society at the end of May. The key focus of the congress will be on the latest findings relating to the prevention of cardiovascular disease and the keynote speaker is Nobel Laureate Michael S. Brown from the USA. Many studies have shown that atherosclerosis, commonly referred to as hardening of the arteries, together with its associated secondary diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, and pulmonary embolisms, is the most common cause of death in the Western world. More than 2,000 medical specialists and top scientists will gather for the congress of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) which is held in a different European city each year. EAS Congress president professor Hans Dieplinger from the Medical University of Innsbruck said he was delighted to be inviting renowned researchers and clinicians from all over the world to come to Innsbruck and noted the 84th EAS congress would be preceded by a lipoprotein(a) symposium, two days before the main event. This, he expects, will attract 200 delegates.
