EUROPE – Over 125 UK corporate buyers and agencies were given a taste of New York City this week as NYC and Company, the city’s tourism bureau, kicked off its inaugural European MICE road show.

The event, on 2 October at DSTRKT venue in London, saw 13 hotels, venues, DMCs and airline partners from the US city offering an insight into their event offering.

“New York City welcomed a record 50.5m visitors last year and once again, the UK was our biggest international market, accounting for over 1m of those,” said Jerry Cito, First Vice President of Convention Development at NYC and Company. “The UK MICE industry makes a significant contribution to these numbers and we’re always glad to be able to engage with UK buyers face to face in order to update them on the latest ideas and activities available across the five boroughs of New York City.”

Following the London event, the NYC and Company delegation is hosting further events in Paris (5 October) and Berlin (6 October) as the MICE road show expands to include key European territories for the first time.

“New York City is in a period of rapid development and expansion,” comments Paul Black, who this year was appointed by NYC and Company to direct MICE marketing activity across continental Europe.

“In 2012, the city reached 90,000 hotel rooms, a 24 per cent increase since 2006, with new facilities, venues, entertainment options and even new neighbourhoods providing fantastic variety for repeat and first-time visitors. In a competitive marketplace, NYC and Company is keen to increase its visibility with European event planners in order to build on the success of recent years and help the city achieve Mayor Bloomberg’s new target of 55m annual visitors by 2015.”
