MIDDLE EAST – The second phase of construction work for the redevelopment of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center (OCEC) has been awarded to Carillion Alawi by the Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran).

The OMR78m (US$202m) contract follows the completion of the first phase by development team Al Habib Joint Venture (KAS-Al Habib JV) within 20 months.

Carillion Alawi’s redevelopment package includes a structured car park facility for 4,200 vehicles on three parking levels, and exhibition halls spanning 22,000sqm of exhibition space which can divide into five halls.

A concourse with a glazed curtain wall system, equipped with a main production kitchen and three cafes will also be built, with hospitality suites, administration areas, a central landscaped courtyard and two circulation nodes connecting the concourse to the car park.

The package also covers the additional buildings, including the Energy Centre, which serves as the district cooling plant for the entire precinct in addition to a security screening facility, taxi amenity building, waste management building, landscape maintenance building and electrical substation facility.

A number of sustainable initiatives in conservation of energy, potable water and use of treated sewage for cooling and irrigation will be implemented within the redevelopment.

“Carillion Alawi offers in-depth local expertise in terms of project delivery, safety, quality, value engineering and innovation,” said Andy Jones, CEO of Carillion Alawi. “We believe that this experience has made Carillion Alawi uniquely qualified to undertake this strategic development.”

Due for completion in late 2016, the centre will also include an additional 14 meeting rooms for up to 360 delegates, two ballrooms to seat up to 2,360, a VIP Pavilion, a food court and a multi-storey car park with capacity for 4,000 vehicles.
