Seoul: Building Asia’s leading MICE destination
Seoul is rapidly emerging as one of Asia’s most dynamic and forward-thinking destinations for the global meetings and business events industry. At IMEX America, Conference & Meetings World (CMW)’s Iain Stirling sat down with Ms. Myunghee Kwon and Ms. Sinae Kang from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, along with Mr. Dohwi Kwak from the Seoul Tourism Organization, to discuss how the South Korean capital is redefining itself as a world-class business events hub. Through progressive sustainability initiatives, innovative infrastructure developments such as the new Hangang River Bus, and strong cultural integration, these leaders are driving Seoul’s vision to become Asia’s premier destination for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions.
Strategic Policies to Attract MICE Events
Seoul Metropolitan Government has implemented targeted policies designed to attract and support international business events. Central to this strategy is an incentive-based support system that rewards organisers who demonstrate environmental responsibility. Events that incorporate eco-friendly practices and reduce their carbon footprint receive enhanced financial and logistical support from the city.
Myunghee Kwon“When we support events from overseas, we care about the CO2 kind of thing,” explains Myunghee Kwon, director, Seoul Metropolitan Government. “If they do more eco-friendly events, we give more support.” This policy framework reflects Seoul’s recognition that modern event organisers increasingly prioritise destinations with strong sustainability credentials and carbon offset capabilities.
The city’s policy approach extends beyond environmental considerations, with officials working to ensure that Seoul’s infrastructure and services align with international standards expected by major associations and corporate meeting planners.
Introducing the Hangang River Bus: Seoul’s Revolutionary Transport Solution
One of Seoul’s most exciting recent developments is the Hangang River Bus service, which officially opened in October 2024. This ground-breaking public transportation system represents a first for the city, which previously had no public transport infrastructure along the iconic Han River.
The river bus service features seven strategically located stops along the waterway, each connected to major hotels, convention centres, and key sites throughout Seoul. With vessels capable of carrying 199 passengers, the service operates on a regular scheduled timetable, making it a reliable option for both tourists and business travellers. Remarkably affordable at approximately $1.50 per journey, the Hangang River Bus is priced competitively with Seoul’s other public transport options, which are notably cheaper than comparable services in other major global cities.
While currently available only as scheduled public transport, Seoul officials confirm that plans are underway to offer exclusive hire options for corporate events and conferences in the future. “It’s going to play its role for public transportation, but also for tourism infrastructure as well,” notes Myunghee Kwon.
The service provides both a sustainable transport solution and an attractive amenity for delegates, with routes that showcase Seoul’s riverside scenery while efficiently connecting key MICE venues. Popular stops include the floating island area, home to impressive event venues and situated in one of Seoul’s most prestigious districts, surrounded by major medical facilities and luxury residential areas.
Hangang BusWorld-Class Infrastructure and Ambitious Expansion Plans
The South Korean capital boasts impressive existing facilities, including the renowned COEX and KINTEX convention & exhibition centres, alongside luxury hotels such as the InterContinental Grand and W Hotel, which feature exceptional event spaces of their own. However, Seoul Metropolitan Government emphasises that the city’s infrastructure is constantly evolving and improving.
“You already saw nice infrastructures already last week, but we’re going to have more, and we’re going to have better infrastructure upcoming,” Myunghee Kwon stated during a recent familiarisation visit CMW had courtesy of Korea Tourism Organization.
A major development on the horizon is a new convention centre near the Jamsil area (KPU), scheduled for completion by 2032. This facility will rival KINTEX in size and is strategically located within the city centre, just 10-15 minutes by car from COEX. The central location addresses a key advantage for convention cities, offering proximity to hotels, dining, and cultural attractions that delegates increasingly expect.
COEXComprehensive Connectivity Options
Seoul offers robust connectivity between Incheon International Airport and the city centre, with direct train services to Seoul Station, complemented by extensive bus and taxi options. The city’s subway system provides comprehensive coverage throughout the metropolitan area, though rush hour traffic remains a consideration during peak times. Public transport rates are notably competitive compared to other major global cities, making Seoul an economically attractive destination for delegates.
While traffic can be heavy during peak hours, the flow remains consistent, with minimal stationary delays compared to other major Asian cities.
Flight connectivity is expanding, with increasing numbers of airlines serving Incheon International Airport. While British Airways has not yet resumed services since the pandemic, strong demand is evident, with flights such as those operated by Asiana Airlines consistently operating at full capacity, indicating robust market interest in Seoul as a destination.
Key Economic Sectors and Event Types
Medical and pharmaceutical events dominate Seoul’s MICE calendar, accounting for an impressive 60-70% of business events. This concentration reflects South Korea’s strength in healthcare innovation and medical research. Technology, automotive, and fintech sectors also feature prominently, showcasing the country’s position as a global leader in these industries.
Companies such as Samsung, LG, and Hyundai maintain a significant presence, with facilities like the Hyundai Motor Studio near KINTEX showcasing the country’s automotive innovation and providing unique venue options for corporate events.
The Seoul Tourism Organization works closely with major venues, including KINTEX, which maintains regular partnerships with international MICE publications such as Exhibition World Magazine, demonstrating the city’s commitment to maintaining strong connections with the global events industry.
Sustainability: A Core Policy Priority
Recognising the growing importance of environmental credentials, Seoul Metropolitan Government has integrated sustainability into its event support framework at a policy level. The city’s point-based evaluation system means that organisers planning eco-friendly events receive enhanced support, with carbon footprint considerations factored into funding decisions.
This policy-driven approach addresses the increasing demands from international organisers for destinations to demonstrate strong sustainability credentials. “It’s another very important factor,” confirms Myunghee Kwon, acknowledging that modern event planners are increasingly selective about destinations based on environmental performance.
The Hangang River Bus itself exemplifies this commitment, offering a sustainable alternative to road transport while reducing congestion and emissions.
Cultural Integration and Community Engagement
Modern event organisers seek more than just conference facilities; they want authentic cultural experiences and opportunities to contribute to local communities. Seoul Metropolitan Government has noted a trend towards organisers engaging in humanitarian work and supporting local economies during their events, and the city actively facilitates these connections.
Seoul offers diverse cultural attractions, from the Korea Folk Village, which provides insights into traditional Korean life, dancing, and customs, to the vibrant contemporary coffee culture evident throughout the city. With thousands of coffee shops including international brands and local favourites like Twosome Place, Seoul creates a welcoming atmosphere that balances tradition with modernity.
Recent hotel developments, including the newly opened Westin, enhance the city’s accommodation offerings, with more luxury properties in the pipeline to meet growing demand.
Namsan TowerSeoul’s Competitive Advantages
When asked about Seoul’s key strengths, representatives highlighted several compelling factors: the city’s reputation as exceptionally safe, its high-tech infrastructure, cultural diversity, and the genuine warmth and friendliness of local people. These factors combine to create a destination that appeals both to business event organisers seeking reliable, modern facilities and to delegates looking for an enriching cultural experience beyond the conference hall.
The floating island venue exemplifies Seoul’s ability to blend modern infrastructure with appealing locations, situated in one of the city’s most prestigious areas near major medical facilities and offering stunning riverside settings for gala dinners and networking events.
Looking Ahead
As Seoul continues to invest in infrastructure, implement progressive sustainability policies, and enhance its transport networks, the city is strategically positioning itself to capture an increasing share of the international MICE market. With strong government support, competitive pricing, and a commitment to both innovation and cultural authenticity, Seoul presents a compelling proposition for event organisers seeking a destination that delivers on multiple levels.
The combination of policy-driven incentives, world-class facilities, and the imminent opening of major new infrastructure projects signals Seoul’s serious ambitions to become Asia’s leading MICE destination in the years ahead.
