Since its opening on 29 June 2004, the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) has stood as a beacon of innovation and economic growth for Australia’s Gold Coast, and has changed the city’s business and tourism landscape. GCCEC sits near the city’s iconic skyline and close to pristine beaches and parks.

A A$127m investment from the Queensland Government and Jupiters Limited – the venue project brought together some of Australia’s leading firms, including Peter Hunt Architects and construction giant Multiplex. Construction spanned five years and involved some remarkable engineering feats. Over 26,000 cubic metres of concrete and 1,770 tonnes of reinforcing steel went into creating a state-of-the-art facility.

Centre of innovation

When GCCEC first opened, it boasted a 6,000-seat arena, a 3,000sqm exhibition hall, landscaped gardens, and 1,400 parking spaces. As its reputation grew, so did demand.

By 2009, GCCEC underwent a $40m expansion, adding two exhibition halls, three new meeting rooms, and an extra 3,000sqm of floor space. Today, its combination of cutting-edge technology, restaurant-quality catering, and exceptional service has cemented GCCEC’s status as one of the most sought-after venues in the Asia-Pacific region.

The centre has truly transformed the city into a premier location for national and international business events. Industries such as medical, finance, real estate, franchise and education have found a home at GCCEC.

A renewed focus on attracting events from the Asia-Pacific region, particularly incentive and reward programmes, has seen the centre position the Gold Coast as a key player in the global MICE market.

Magnet for memorable events

Over the past 20 years, the centre has hosted some of the most high-profile events in the region. In 2015, for example, GCCEC hosted Microsoft Ignite Australia, which featured astronaut Buzz Aldrin as a keynote speaker. For the event, the team constructed a full-scale go-kart track in the centre’s car park.

In 2007, GCCEC catered to 6,000 Chinese Amway delegates over four evenings, serving each guest a five-course lobster meal in just 90 minutes, accompanied by roller skaters. The annual Australian Cotton Conference has also become a staple of the GCCEC calendar, using the venue to showcase expansive, cotton-themed backdrops that merge rural themes with urban sophistication.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games saw GCCEC shine on the global stage, hosting netball and basketball competitions while serving as the event’s official international broadcasting centre. This dual role saw over 3,000 media representatives from around the world pass through its doors.

The city’s hybrid environment, offering professional networking in a relaxed, tropical setting, has become a key selling point for international clients who can enjoy the Gold Coast’s unique climate, with its warm winters. As well as the beaches, delegates can balance work with leisure, exploring lush rainforests and enjoy a wide array of off-site experiences.

Connectivity

Accessibility has also been a major factor in GCCEC’s success. The Gold Coast Airport offers direct flights to New Zealand and seasonal services to Malaysia and Hong Kong, while Brisbane International Airport, just an hour away, provides daily connections to major global hubs including the United States, Canada and Asia.

GCCEC is looking to bring in new events during off-peak periods, ensuring the venue remains vibrant year-round and management is keen to expand the centre’s reach in the Asia-Pacific market.

Former Queensland premier Peter Beattie once described GCCEC as a “magnet for tourism” and a “magnificent addition to the Gold Coast’s world-class attractions.” From hosting global stars like Pink and Keith Urban, to accommodating large-scale conferences and international sporting events, GCCEC stands as a symbol of the city’s ambition, innovation and global appeal.
