Singapore building projection smashes three Guinness World Records

A stunning visual feat in Singapore. The display sets three world records. A projection-mapping show on UOB Plaza 1 produces 5.85m lumens across 250m pixels on the 280m-tall building. Running until 9 August, it celebrates both the bank's 90th anniversary and Singapore's 60 years of independence.

A projection-mapping show on Singapore’s joint-second-tallest building has set three Guinness World Records for largest light output, longest temporary display, and highest building projection. The 280-metre display broke multiple records with its scale and technical achievement.

The show has been officially certified as the: largest light output in a projected image longest architectural projection-mapped display (temporary) highest projection image on a building.

The display on the 280m-tall UOB Plaza 1 building in Raffles Place produces a total of 5.85m lumens and covers about 250m pixels. The projection mapping project, which started on 28 June and runs until 9 August, comprises three separate shows, including one marking the 60th anniversary of Singapore’s independence.

Bank’s 90th anniversary

Presented in collaboration with multimedia integrator Hexogon Solution, UNITY brings the Singaporean-based bank’s 90-year history (UOB90) to life through a six-minute animation in three acts:

The first act connects the audience with UOB’s beginnings with a sequence that plays on the building’s architectural and surrounding elements such as the Singapore River. The second act celebrates UOB’s achievements and milestones through the use of Asian-inspired motifs and music.

Inspired by traditional art forms such as wayang kulit, watercolour painting and metal work, projections depict shadow-play puppets and portraits of women. The third act offers a glimpse of the future through vivid images of technology and nature working in tandem.

Independence celebrations

To mark the 60th anniversary of Singapore’s independence (SG60), meanwhile, the UOB Plaza 1 building is also being lit up with projections that pay tribute to Singapore’s history. The projection also features Majulah Singapura, a work by local contemporary artist Sam Lo that celebrates Singapore’s multicultural identity and collective spirit.

Janet Young, UOB’s head of group channels, digitalisation, strategic communications and brand, said: “The projection showcase is our way of giving back, offering a record-breaking visual spectacle for the community, both for those who are based here and those visiting from overseas, to enjoy and to celebrate our shared journey.”
