The European Stroke Organisation (ESO), whose head office is located in Basel, Switzerland, is to take its 10th annual congress not far at all – just down the road in its home town. The 2024 conference will be held in this city on the Rhine, 15-17 May. The ESO has a mission to sustainably improve treatment methods for strokes by providing comprehensive education, which is why it stages a conference on research and the clinical care of patients with cerebrovascular diseases every year. The ESO Conference will involve clinical trials, workshops and debates, and will bring together medical professionals from different disciplines, institutes, and regions. More than 4,000 participants from 100 countries are expected to attend the 2024 gathering. The conference will thus be one of the biggest of its kind ever staged in Basel and organisers have booked not only all the meeting rooms at the Congress Center Basel but also those in the neighbouring Marriott Hotel and the Event Hall at Messe Basel. The city is regarded as a leading teaching and research location for the life sciences and medicine in Europe. For example, there is an ESO-certified Stroke Center at the University Hospital in Basel. Host venue Messe and Congress Center Basel offers combined exhibition space of more than 8,000sqm with numerous breakout spaces. “As the local host, I am absolutely delighted to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the ESO conference on home soil,” says professor Dr Lyrer, senior consultant for cerebrovascular diseases at the University Hospital, who was responsible for initiating the event in Basel and is a former president of the Swiss Stroke Society. The Society has driven forward the development of diagnosis and treatment options for strokes in Switzerland in a decisive manner over the past few decades and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2021, a key reason behind its bid to host this international conference in Switzerland.
