The Italian city of Naples has won its bid to host the World Tunnelling Congress, to be held May 2019. The congress is expected to draw 2,000 participants, including many international engineers. Global PCO, AIM Group International, worked with the Bid Committee and president of the Italian Tunnelling Society (SIG), Andrea Pigorini, to present the city’s candidacy. They were backed by the city’s convention bureau and triumphed ahead of competitor cities London, Istanbul and Salzburg. AIM Group International supported SIG in all phases of the candidacy, including the feasibility study, the definition of the budget, contacts with the authorities and local suppliers, and activities to promote the destination. Two videos backing the bid were created by Tecnoconference TCGroup. Marica Motta, sales operations coordinator of AIM Group International, who worked on the process, said: “It’s a major success for Naples and Italy: ours is the only country to organise this conference three times. The experience gained in the organisation of the previous editions, in Florence in 1986 and Milan in 2001, allowed us to bring the candidacy of Naples to a successful conclusion…It was a challenging project but very rewarding”. Giovanna Lucherini, director of the Convention Bureau of Naples added that it was an important result for the city. “It was our goal to create a quality proposal that would compete internationally,” he said.
