The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) has welcomed the government’s commitment to ensuring the survival of Rex Airlines, acknowledging the critical role regional aviation plays in supporting Australia’s tourism industry.
ATEC managing director Peter Shelley (pictured) welcomed the Albanese government’s announcement which includes measures to assist with the airline’s sale, maintain access to key regional flight slots, and develop contingency plans if needed.
“This is an important step towards securing reliable and affordable domestic air services, which are vital to those living in regional communities and for domestic and international visitors looking to experience Australia’s unique regional destinations,” Shelley said.
He continued: “Domestic airfares can be as expensive as international flights and uncertainty around flight availability to iconic tourism destinations makes it harder for international visitors to plan their trips.
“These barriers around regional aviation access and costs hinder Australia’s ability to compete as a global tourism destination and limit regional communities’ access to the economic benefits of international visitor spending.
“Tourism operators are actively promoting Australia to travellers seeking to experience the ‘real Australia’ – off the beaten track and in regional areas – and it is crucial we ensure the infrastructure is in place to effectively meet the growing demand.
“We firmly believe that ensuring reliable air services to regional Australia is essential for boosting both domestic and international tourism and fully support initiatives that will enhance regional connectivity.”
