The RoboCup International Symposium and World Championships, to be held at the International Convention Centre Sydney in June 2019, could inject up to A$7m (US$5.03m) into the Australian economy, according to the country’s tourism chiefs.
The symposium win follows a successful bid by Business Events Sydney (BESydney) and partners, including the University of New South Wales (UNSW), RoboCupJunior Australia, and Bastion Collective.
RoboCup aims, by 2050, to field a team of autonomous humanoid robots capable of defeating the World Cup-winning team in a match governed by FIFA rules.
2,000 researchers and innovators from 50 nations are expected in Sydney for RoboCup events.
CEO of BESydney, Lyn Lewis-Smith, said: “Over six days, up to 600 teams will compete in front of 20,000 spectators.”
Australia’s chief scientist, professor Ian Chubb, said: “RoboCup will be a major event for Sydney and will be another way to spark interest nationally in science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects.”
UNSW president and vice-chancellor, Ian Jacobs, said: “We look forward to competing again in 2019 on home soil, showcasing the outstanding capabilities of UNSW’s computer science and engineering students.”
