National industry association Meetings & Events Australia’s CEO Robyn Johnson and the MEA Board have announced two senior staff positions are to be “discontinued” due to the impact on the events industry of Covid-19.
The MEA said its decisions had followed a review of the association’s short-term structure to ensure it “remains stable, active and relevant for its membership”.
The staffing decision follows the recent announcement made regarding the MEA’s National Awards programme and Evolve 2020 postponements. Two positions on the MEA team have been impacted, including the role of National Events Manager held by Fran Barlow, who was responsible for developing the programme for Evolve 2020, which now has been postponed.
The Partnerships Manager role has also been impacted, which was a new role that Christopher Lazzari was engaged for to reposition MEA.
Robyn Johnson, CEO of MEA commented: “I, along with the MEA Board and team are devastated to lose two of our team members. The decisions were difficult to make, however, it was necessary to ensure the stability of the organisation. Members’ investment in MEA will be shifted into managing the immediate needs of providing education, support, information and lobbying government for a support package – for our members and the broader industry. Fran and Christopher have been outstanding in responding to the news, a testament to their professionalism and we thank them for their incredible support and commitment to the industry.”
“Many companies across the industry are having to make similar decisions to keep their organisations operating so they can get through this and it’s important for business owners and staff to stay positive and focused in these incredibly difficult times,” she added. “As the sector bounces back, we will be ready.”
The Australian government has banned all ‘non-essential’ gatherings of more than 500 people and the MEA is working with venues to determine potential new dates for each of the State and Territory Awards and for its three-day conference Evolve 2020.
