Australia’s Northern Territory’s capital, Darwin has been selected to host the Associated Country Women of the World’s (ACWW) 33rd Triennial World Conference in 2032.

This international conference will connect the voices of rural women from across the globe to bring the issues they face, and the solutions to the attention of national and international policymakers and legislators.

Northern Territory Business Events partnered with the Darwin Convention Centre and local organisation, the Country Women’s Association of the Northern Territory, to secure hosting rights for the conference.

Darwin was announced as the successful bidder at ACWW’s 31st Triennial World Conference held in Ottawa in May. As a precursor to the world conference, Darwin will also welcome the ACWW Pacific Area Conference in 2027, with the regional event expected to attract 200 delegates.

The 2032 global congress is expected to attract over 500 delegates.

Suzana Bishop, CEO of the NT Government’s Department of Tourism and Hospitality, said: “Hosting this global conference in Darwin is a major achievement for the Northern Territory and a powerful opportunity to welcome rural women from across the globe. It provides a meaningful setting to celebrate strength, community and collaboration, values which are deeply embedded in both the Territory and ACWW.”

ACWW was founded in 1929 to bring together rural women and their organisations all over the world, and in so doing address the challenges they faced because of the isolation of their communities, discrimination against women, and their lack of standing in political processes. ACWW’s membership spans 82 countries.

A key policy focus of ACWW is their advocacy to UNESCO for equitable access to quality education at all levels for women, as well as the importance of traditional and inherited knowledge, Indigenous languages, and global citizenship.

The World President of ACWW, Marie Kenny, said: “The Associated Country Women of the World is thrilled that we will be hosting the 33rd Triennial World Conference in Darwin, Northern Territory in 2032 – it will be the first conference after our Centenary in 2029.

“With the long and passionate history of support and engagement from local members of the Country Women’s Association, as well as the positive relationships already established with the community and the traditional Larrakia landowners, we couldn’t think of a more wonderful opportunity to celebrate the start of our second centenary of impact as rural women in action.”

The Northern Territory Government supports the attraction of international association conferences through administering the NT Business Events Support Fund that offers financial assistance to eligible organisations considering the Northern Territory for their international business events.
