Cairns is set to welcome back numerous international business events as Australia scraps the pre-departure Covid-19 testing for international arrivals, 17 April. The Cairns Convention Centre has recently secured several conferences including:

  • International Network for Social Network Analysis (SUNBELT)
  • Lowitja Institute International Indigenous Health and Wellbeing Conference
  • Australian Menopause Society Conference

Janet Hamilton, general manager of the Cairns Convention Centre believes business events will provide the Cairns region and Queensland an added boost post Covid-19. “Seeing the return of conferences will boost the business travel sector in Cairns which will significantly help the region’s operators and fill the hotel rooms. It is great to see associations and corporates gaining confidence and confirming national and international events,” stated Hamilton. The Cairns Convention Centre has been refurbished during the pandemic, which features contemporary light interiors, audio-visual equipment, and new building systems. Hamilton added: “The new contemporary design and colours integrate the Centre with our beautiful destination. The new expansion is going to bring new opportunities for events, with a large outdoor terrace looking across the stunning Trinity Inlet, which will certainly make for great networking and immersion into our tropical lifestyle.” The Centre will host over 25 conferences before December 2022 with an estimated 8,000 delegates, bringing over $25m (US$18m) in spend to the Cairns region. In addition, funding support for business events at the Cairns Convention Centre, through the Queensland Government Convention and Exhibition Centre Economic Recovery Bid Support Programme, will assist in bringing more national conferences to the region over the next three years. Adding to the conferences coming to Cairns, the Centre is hosting a range of public events, seminars, graduations, banquets and concerts. Highlights include Guy Sebastian, Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, PBR Invitational and the Resilience Project in partnership with the NQ Cowboys.
