Carlson Wagonlit Travel new sales break $2bn barrier

Global travel management agency Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) has reported, 9 March, US$2bn in sales attributable to new business for the first time (2015: $1.7bn).

CWT Meetings & Events organised 35,000 meetings and events – up 27% on 2015, according to results released for the agency’s financial year to 31 December 2016.

“We are beginning to see the benefits of our new 3.0 strategy. We are making changes to our business as the new dynamics of the marketplace and the needs and expectations of our customers evolve,” said CWT president and CEO Kurt Ekert.

In the 2016 financial year CWT reported 58.7m transactions across the business, including joint ventures, and noted its app CWT To Go™, saw 40% increase in users.

In the UK & Ireland, CWT won new clients worth £163m in 2016. Hotel volume grew 8% year-on-year, which the agency attributes to advances in hotel content and booking technology. And the agency added its CWT Fares special rate air bookings grew by 22% year-on-year.

The agency admitted its CWT Energy, Resources & Marine business had been adversely impacted by reductions in travel spend as lower commodity prices and political changes continued to affect the sector, resulting in the total transaction volume decline of 23%. CWT closed 2016 with $23bn in total transaction volume, down from $24.2bn in 2015.

CWT’s consulting arm, CWT Solutions Group, achieved 13% revenue growth.
