Over 6,600 athletes and officials from 70 Commonwealth nations and territories converged on 4 April to take part in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) in the Gold Coast, Queensland. The largest sporting event Australia has hosted this decade, the 11-day long competition concludes on 15 April. Host to the GC2018, the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre inQueensland is the largest regional convention centre in Australia, featuring 6,000sqm of exhibition space and 5,000 capacity seat arena.
GC2018 events will be hosted across 18 competition venues located on the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville.
The Queensland government delivered three new competition venues and upgraded a further seven venues, including: Carrara Sports Precinct Redevelopment; Queensland State Velodrome; Broadbeach Bowls Club; Gold Coast Hockey Centre; Nerang Mountain Bike Trails project; Gold Coast Aquatic Centre; Coomera Indoor Sports Centre and Belmont Shooting Complex. Further venues hosting GC2018 events:
- Southport Broadwater Parkland – the marathon, race walking and triathlon;
- Robina Stadium – Rugby 7s Elanora;
- Currumbin Valley – road cycling;
- Oxenford Studios – boxing, table tennis and squash;
- Cairns Convention Centre – basketball heats;
- Townsville Convention Centre – basketball heats; and
- Coolangatta Beachfront – beach volleyball.
