The 35th European Film Awards ceremony take place in Iceland’s capital Reykjavík, 10 December 2022. After an in-person hiatus due to the global pandemic, the ceremony will take place at the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre with around 1,300 guests attending. The Awards will honour the greatest achievements in European filmmaking over the past year at a ceremony which traditionally attracts some of the top professionals from across Europe’s film industry. For Reykjavík, the European Film Awards are a great opportunity to showcase Icelandic art, culture, and design and to highlight Iceland as a destination for film productions. The fact that the awards will be held in Reykjavík this year is also an important recognition of the flourishing home-grown Icelandic film industry, with films such as Godland securing multiple awards this year, as well as the well-established opportunities Iceland has to offer with many blockbuster films shot in Iceland from Star Wars to Stardust, Bond to Batman. HBO’s worldwide sensation Game of Thrones filmed in multiple locations including Lake Mývatn, Dimmuborgir and Þingvellir National Park. To celebrate the European Film Awards and increase the event’s sustainability, an ‘EFA forest’ was planted in the Heiðmörk Nature Reserve in 2020 – the year the awards were initially to be hosted in Iceland. The 3,750 trees planted have had time to thrive and are waiting for the European Film Awards to finally come to Reykjavík after two years of waiting. The European Film Awards first took place in Berlin in 1988 to promote and support the European film industry. The Awards ceremony takes place every two years in Berlin with the following year being held in another European city. Full nominations for this year’s film awards were announced on 8 November.
