On 7 and 8 July, Hamburg, Germany, will host heads of state and government of the world’s leading 20 industrialised and emerging economies and their delegations for what will also be a major showcase opportunity for the northern city’s meetings and events potential.

The G20 summit is set to attract 10,000 delegates and journalists.

Following the opening of the dramatic new waterside venue, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, in January 2017, the G20 summit provides another big opportunity for the city to raise its profile at an international level.

In addition to the short-term monetary value being added by the G20 summit, Hamburg hopes to benefit from long-term gains, as it leverages the summit to pave the way for subsequent meetings and generating increased awareness within the meetings industry.

Michael Otremba, managing director of the Hamburg Convention Bureau, believes that the opportunities are considerable. “By implementing large-scale events such as the upcoming G20 summit or the 2019 Rotary International Convention in an impeccable, focused and well-versed manner, our city strengthens its image within the industry even further and can be confident in facing the comparison with top international event destinations,” Otremba said.

Hamburg is no newcomer to the large conference market, as demonstrated in 2013 when 24,000 participants gathered for the Lions Clubs International Convention in the city. And the 2019 Rotary International Convention is another upcoming highlight in Hamburg’s event agenda. Approximately 25,000 participants are expected to attend that event.

Congress Center Hamburg (CCH), which is currently undergoing comprehensive renovation, is due for completion in 2019, when it will emerge as one of the largest conference centres in Europe, with 12,000sqm of exhibition space, 12,000sqm of foyer space and seating for 12,000 people in up to 50 function rooms.

The venues for the G20 Event in July will be the Elbphilharmonie and the Hamburg fair complex in the middle of the city.
