The Gold Coast has already benefited from Australia’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, GC2018, with an additional planed 24,400 delegates coming to the city in the aftermath of the Games. Some 680,000 visitors and 6,600 athletes from 70 countries attended GC2018, 4-15 April 2018. A broader benefit to business events has come through the injection of new development and infrastructure enhancing existing facilities, which, in turn, is expected to deliver more choice for business events in the Gold Coast. There are also new venues taking shape, as well as the redevelopment of public spaces. Among the investments that have resulted from hosting GC2018 is Gold Coast Airport’s multimillion-dollar upgrade; and a A$1.4bn (US$1.05) integrated resort precinct under construction, with the first stage of the Ruby project under way and subsequent phases set to deliver over the next five years. Further developments include Jewel beachfront’s $970m development; and The Star Gold Coast $845m transformation with a 17-storey six-star hotel opening prior to GC2018. Some big events secured post Commonwealth Games include:

  • Asian Patent Attorneys Association General Assembly 2020 – 1500 delegates
  • International Council for Near Infrared Spectroscopy  2019 – 500 delegates
  • International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication Conference 2018 – 1000 delegates
  • International Communication Association Conference 2020 – 1200 delegates
  • 18th Australian Space Research Conference – September 2018 – 150 delegates
