I’d like to thank…

In this season of awards and Christmas and New Year parties, our sometime columnist Richard John, COO of Realise, has clearly seen too many awards gigs and let it all go to his head…

You’ll have noticed the plethora of lists covering the ‘Most Influential People in Events’ and the ‘Top Men in Global Meetings’, and even the ‘Most Significant Names in Event Technology’. (In every case my name failed to appear.)

I am, therefore, thrilled to the marrow of my being and rendered orgasmic to the core in announcing that I have been short-listed in the ‘Most Loved Person named Richard John in the Global Events Industry.’ I would have liked to have thanked the people who recommended me, but there weren’t any. (Even when I put my laptop in front of my mother, open at the nominations page, she still refused and switched to reruns of ‘Dynasty.’) So, I did it myself.

No matter. In my completely spontaneous and unprepared acceptance speech I will be thanking my clients, my colleagues, my family, my friends, my neighbours, the judges, the venue, my school teachers, random strangers, and the person who blocked my car in and made me late for this prestigious ceremony. It is indeed an honour to have been chosen.

STOP PRESS: in a closely fought competition between both nominees I lost out to a hair stylist in Worthing High Street in the UK who delivered an exceptional cut and blow dry to a passing events assistant. Them’s the breaks.
