ASIA – Singapore has won its bid to host the Lions Clubs International (LCI) Convention 2020. The convention is one of the world’s largest, and the biggest association congress to come to Singapore, with 20,000 attendees expected. The Lions Clubs Singapore will partner the Singapore Exhibition & Conventions Bureau (SECB) to stage an event that is expected to generate more than S$58m (US$88.8m) in tourism receipts. “We are thrilled that Singapore has won the bid to host the 103rd Lions Clubs International Convention in 2020. We are really excited to partner STB in delivering a memorable event for Lions members from all over the world,” said Charlie Chan, LCI’s international director. The winning bid was put together with the help of various public agencies, as well as MICE industry stakeholders including hotel partners and convention venues. The venue for the convention has not been confirmed, however. “The LCI Convention 2020 is one of the most coveted events on the congress circuit and we are truly delighted to be able to host this iconic event. Come 2020, we will aim to deliver a spectacular welcome and experience for our LCI friends,” said Lionel Yeo, chief executive of the Singapore Tourism Board. “We would like to congratulate Lions Clubs Singapore, and thank all the partners who have combined their efforts to score this winning bid.” Lions Clubs Singapore has 89 clubs and more than 2,500 members. This makes up part of LCI’s global membership of more than a million people worldwide. Held in June or July each year since 1917, the convention has traditionally brought significant tourism and economic impact to host cities. “Singapore was selected over five other cities for her world-class hotels, restaurants, and convention facilities, as well as an excellent transportation network,” said convention committee chairperson Joseph Wroblewski, LCI past international president. https://www.www.c-mw.net/sydney-surges-as-dubai-and-singapore-struggle/ Recognised for its service to the blind and visually impaired, LCI is exploring collaborating with the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) to work towards a ‘20/20 Vision’ eye-care model, including setting a Guinness World Record for the largest number of volunteers involved in a public eye-screening event.
