The Japanese capital, Tokyo, has been selected to host the 11th edition of computer graphics conference SIGGRAPH Asia in 2018.
Tokyo has been lobbying to bring the conference to the city for many years.
SIGGRAPH Asia originated from SIGGRAPH, an event held in the USA every year since 1974 and which has now grown into the world’s largest and most influential conference/exhibition in terms of computer graphics and interactive techniques, with tens of thousands of attendees.
Having started in 2008, SIGGRAPH Asia took place in Yokohama and Kobe in 2009 and 2015, respectively.
The bid committee and Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB) has worked hard and is confident given the city is the largest hub of the computer graphics and interactive techniques in Japan.
Many local Tokyo companies, associations and academic institutions will be involved in hosting of the conference. Square Enix, Polygon Pictures, OLM, IBM, Digital Hollywood Univ., CESA, VFX-JAPAN and Design & Technology Association are among those that have stepped forward.
Tokyo International Forum (TIF) will be the venue host for SIGGRAPH Asia 2018 and hosted a site visit from Professor Yong Tsui Lee, SIGGRAPH Asia Conference Advisory Group chair.
Financial and in-kind support for the bid came from Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) and TCVB. The organisations also helped with bid paper preparation.
The Association of Computer Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (ACM SIGGGRAPH) sponsors SIGGRAPH Asia. Founded in 1947, ACM is an academic society uniting the world’s computing educators, researchers, and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources, and address the field’s challenges.
