With over 70 non-European countries having highlighted wind energy in their national climate and energy plans, and more than 90 countries now using wind turbines to generate power, wind energy, thanks to technology development and cost reduction, has become a global success story. The Global Wind Summit, to be held in Hamburg in 2018, reflects this breakthrough. The Global Wind Summit 2018 event will comprise WindEnergy Hamburg, the world’s leading wind industry expo, and the WindEurope Conference. The two top-level meetings will be held in parallel at the Hamburg Messe exhibition site, 25-28 September 2018. The Global Wind Summit will bring together decision-makers from business and government and showcase the latest technical developments. Organisers also expect many business deals to be closed in Hamburg. Bernd Aufderheide, president and CEO Hamburg Messe and Congress, said: “As the organisers of the world’s leading expo for wind energy, we are combining our expertise with that of WindEurope to provide the best possible development platform for global growth in the wind industry. Nowhere else in the world is there a high-powered and absolutely international industry event like the Global Wind Summit in Hamburg in 2018.” Giles Dickson, WindEurope CEO added: “The Conference and Expo will fit perfectly alongside each other. WindEurope will deliver a high-quality conference that meets the needs of the profile of the expo visitors. It’ll be a great event. We expect the complete spectrum of wind industry stakeholders including policy makers, leading industry figures, opinion formers, international organisations and financial institutions.” Frank Horch, Hamburg’s Senator of Economy, Transport and Innovation, said that the ‘North German Energy Transition (NEW) 4.0’ project, run by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, was an outstanding example of future cross-regional solutions for power supply, adding: “The Global Wind Summit has exactly the right venue here in Hamburg, with its competence clusters for wind energy.” Eighty percent of the 65,000sqm event space has been allocated a year out from the expo and organisers say they expect 1,400 exhibitors and over 35,000 wind experts from every continent to attend the summit as delegates. The conference will see 500 presentations and will occupy the upper floors of Halls B3 and B4.
